I Dream
To Kaya, our granddaughter, who loves to roam our woods in France
I dream of trees, some green, some tall,
and fragrance from the grass so small;
of lawns and meadows, mountains, seas,
yet my favourite dream is that of trees.
I dream of lacy, leafy arches
where wind whispers through their branches.
I dream of trees, some young, some old,
hiding histories untold.
Shrouded forms that breathe and sigh
as wanderers pass by,
offering shafts to that unknown
where soundless melodies are sown.
Seethed with silence through the night.
Standing noble in their plight.
Pillars of grandeur towering high,
vainly trying to reach the sky.
I dream of trees for every season
struggling with a nameless reason
which age and wisdom has not gotten
that all behind will be forgotten,
and I never lose the fear
that all in front may disappear.
Yet, I dream.
