When painting, whether it be landscapes, still life or portraits, I start by intensely viewing the subject, exploring with the eye the visual space, judging the general composition, ready for the picture. Realistically, when working, I will observe the perspective and measure carefully from one object to another, one form to another, assessing their relative proportions and so on. In a fantasy picture or book illustration such accuracy does not apply in the same way.
Back in the studio, as an artist, I have the freedom to become more selective with the composition including only what is necessary for the conveyance of a mood, atmosphere, weather, time of day, or any other aspect I have in mind that the subject may suggest. I have full freedom to explore textures, patterns, volumes, forms, tonal aspects and perspectives and the right, if I feel the need, to re-arrange and create a satisfying composition for the viewer and myself to enjoy. Creating the illusion of space and depth on a flat surface will enable, I hope, the viewer to enter the picture and travel through the space exploring, as I do, all the aspects mentioned above.
In nature I enjoy observing the patterns of sunlight and shadows caused by passing clouds, reflections on water or through glass, the heat of the sun, the chill of the breeze, the grey of a frosty morning, the fresh dew on a flower, and the force of moving water, all to be seized with the end of a brush. One has the choice of deciding whether to paint each blade of grass or to capture the sense of infinite space with one sweep of a brush stroke.
Living here in the far south of France, the clarity of light has had a deep influence on my work and my previous experiences with the design for textile printing, lithography, or other commercial work has helped to clarify my use of tonal values and economise with colour.
Life is a series of contrasts and for me, the challenge lies in the search for balance and harmony within the living world that I view, which is why composition and design is such an important factor in my work.
